According to Mayor Ken Suffridge, the Aragon City Council never discussed Sunday sales prior to the November, 2011 election.
Following questions by convenient store owners, an ordinance was placed on the January 19 meeting agenda.
Council members heard a required first reading and approved the document at the group's March meeting.
Mayor Suffridge said the proposal was sent to the Polk County Board of Elections and will be placed on July’s ballot so that Aragon voters can decide.
During the meeting, Sgt. Marc Riley announced Aragon Police Department has been awarded a $10,000 public safety partnership grant.
These funds are from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) in Atlanta.
The incentive grant, which will continue through September of this year, is designed for smaller law enforcement agencies that have partnered with GOHS and excelled in participating in highway safety initiatives as well as making their communities safe during the previous year.
Equipment to be purchased includes Laser, laptops and state software, window tint meters, sensors, alcohol flashlight, and spotlight.
In other business, Council members took no action on a proposal to declare Aragon’s ladder fire truck as surplus.
Councilman Hunter Spinks made a motion to discuss the agenda item. No second was given. If it had been approved, bids would have been taken to sell the vehicle.
The group approved a resolution authorizing the transmittal of the new, 5-year Short Term Work Program update to the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission.
They also group voted to delete the Director of Public Works position and hire Mike Long as an employee in that department.
“Aragon is not large enough for a director’s position,” Mayor Suffridge said.
