Going into games this week, the Lady Bulldogs were 5-5 on the season.
In their first game after the Christmas break on Jan. 10, the Lady Bulldogs lost to Pepperell, 20-17.
“It was a heartbreaker,” head coach Ashley Davis said. “We had a few chances in the last few minutes to tie it up, but we couldn’t hit any of our shots.”
Davis said that Tia Covington and Victoria Frazier both fouled out of the game.
“Another thing that hurt us was our free throws,” Davis said. “We went to the line 17 times, but only made four.”
In their next game against Darlington on Jan. 12, the young Cedartown squad lost 48-32.
“We had them in the first quarter, we were playing hard on both sides of the court,” Davis said. “At the end of the first quarter it was eight to eight.”
Unfortunately, Darlington outscored Cedartown 20-3 in the second quarter.
“We had a few key injuries in this game,” Davis noted. “Tia went out in the second quarter with a hurt knee and Keely Smith was sidelined with a sprain ankle. These two girls are both starters and to see them hurt and on the bench deflated our team.”
Davis did point out that Shana Abram and Frazier both played well in the Darlington game.
“Victoria had 13 points and Shana six,” Davis said. “Ava Tillmann also played well, scoring eight points.”
Cedartown did have their game against Coosa on Jan. 17 rescheduled due to snowy and icy weather.
On Jan. 21, the Lady Bulldogs got back into the win column by beating Chattooga 41-36.
“This was a very stressful and sloppy game for us,” Davis said. “With Tia being hurt, we had to move some players around. Tillmann moved from a post position to a guard position. And she really did well during the game.”
Davis said the Lady Bulldogs were losing 25-20 at halftime, but outscored Chattooga 9-4 in the third quarter to send the game into the final period tied at 29.
In the fourth quarter, Cedartown outscored Chattooga 12-7 to win the game.
“It was a very sloppy game on our part, but a win is a win,” Davis said. “Frazier led us with 16 points. She attempted 16 free throws and made eight. Tillmann scored 12 and Smith hung in there for us and played every minute.”
Davis also pointed out the defensive play of Blair Bedford and Allyson Barnett.
“In the third and fourth quarter, they really played well, stealing the ball multiple times,” Davis said. “Barnett also got her first two points of the season.”
The Lady Bulldogs will play at Rockmart on Saturday and against Coosa on Monday, before closing out the regular season on Thursday, Jan. 31, when they travel to Model for a league game.
