Plans are to add another family-friendly event to Rockmart’s busy downtown calendar every fourth Saturday night, beginning in August.

The event – a Rockmart Biker Cruise In – is described as a fun and relaxing way for motorcyclists to end their day’s rides. It will also include games for adults and children, musical entertainment and a place for vendors to set up educational, food and merchandise displays. No alcoholic beverages will be allowed.

Proposed bike games would include the barrel race, slow race, ring toss, ride the plank and others. Other general public games could be beanbag toss, inflatable, horseshoes, ring toss and more.

The suggested timeline would begin at 4:30 p.m. with music at 5 o’clock, games at 6, drawings after these end. All activities would climax at 9:30 p.m.

“Rockmart provides an ideal destination for bikers because it is small and has plenty of scenic beauty and a welcoming atmosphere,” said Jr Martin, Christian Motorcycle Apparel.

The idea originated when Martin visited Rockmart and said he “fell in love” with the community.

He said, best of all, there are many roads in Polk that can be taken in and out of the community. These are described - not as main highways or thoroughfares - but winding and curvy that bikers enjoy riding.

Previously, Martin visited a Motorcycle Cruise In held in Eton, Georgia, north of Chatsworth. The Cruise, held there for the past two years, started with 15-20 bikes. By the end of the 2008 season, more than 600 bikers were in attendance.

Martin, in a presentation to the Rockmart Mayor and Council, said the riding season usually begins in April and ends in October. A once a month event could assure that Rockmart becomes known as a biker destination.

“The success of the event will depend on bikers enjoying their stay in Rockmart and the welcome they get from local and community leaders,” he said.

Ed Barber, Star Touring and Riding, said he has been working with the Rockmart Business Alliance (RBA) and business owners have expressed an interest in the event.

City Manager Jeff Ellis said he had contacted the mayor in Chatsworth and he had only positive comments about the activities in Eton.

“We have been discussing the idea since April,” he said. “Everyone is very excited about the proposal. I think it is a good thing for the community and a good program for local families.”

Ellis said he is convinced the family-friendly games and activities will not impact downtown

business establishments since it will be held in parking areas near the Senior Citizens building.

“It could enhance the business of merchants that decide to remain open after hours due to the crowd the Cruise In is expected to bring into town,” Ellis said.

Folks,

I've lived in or near Polk Co since the mid-60s. Yes, there are ridiculous, stupid, embarrassing, humorous, etc. people and events here...just as there are everywhere. It gets reported here more often because there isn't more or bigger crimes to take the spotlight. Some people consider that a good thing...

True, life here isn't as 'progressive' as it is in other areas. Again, some people consider that a good thing. Life is quieter but one can still drive quickly & easily to Rome or Hiram to eat, shop or whatever.

I agree with Mr Driver. I'm so proud to be an American, where we can each choose where to live and have the freedom to voice our opinions about anything we feel like venting about, even if it is making fun of ourselves & our neighbors. (BTW, anonymous, you may THINK the rest of the state, etc. doesn't include YOU when they may be making fun of Polk Co but if you LIVE HERE, guess what?? You're considered by the rest of the world to be one of us!)

One other thing. If the Rockmart or Cedartown papers bug you so much, why do you bother reading them? One of the major plusses of living out here is the lack of anger & viciousness like several of you have been spouting on here. This article was about a once-a-month event coming to ROCKMART. The comments on here are complaining about the lack of progress in the county and other problems in other parts of the county. I don't see how any of that is relevant to the topic.

Folks, I have read your comments. I can understand how many of you feel. Some of it can be found as humorous. The people that don't like Polk County, for whatever reason it is okay to express it, because we have freedom of speech. At least you are passionate about your feelings & your beliefs. Maybe someone out there will do what they are suppose to do to remedy these problems. I was born in Metro Atlanta, but I have lived in Polk County since 1988. I love it here, it is my own piece of heaven when I come back from work in Norcross & Alpharetta. All I can say is 'God Bless the USA'. Be grateful what you have, the Constitution. It's a wonderful thing.

I have lived in Polk all my life and on all sides of the county. I simply cannot DISAGREE with what is said below and includes: "None is as backwards , uneducated and fears success as Polk County . I have never seen a place that is as anti- progress and stuck in it's ways as Cedartown and Rockmart ."

A certain force runs Polk and is stuck in a mind warp that needs a change. I have comtemplated a lawsuit most of my adult life against the way certain thhings are done. What is really surprising is how the US Attorney General simply turns it's back when it sees the mess here.

If you work for the county , you might be one of those bumbling inept bureaucrats that would tell me something different every day when I would go in there for building permits and the like . If so, then YOU are a HUGE part of the problem .

I read the local online paper for laughs , because your idiot criminals do such STUPID things . As for the schools, I have heard from many reviewers that the schools here are FULL of DRUGS. I'm glad that mine is college age and goes to GA. Tech . As for moving, I like my few acres here BECAUSE it is right on the county line , I bought it for CHEAP since it is Polk County ( therefore virtually worthless real estate. ), and my pitiful little bit of tax $$ goes to pay your meager little salary.btw, I saw where taxes are going up , but still a bargain compared to Floyd , Bartow and Gordon .

Anonymous- Everything that you listed about things you have seen go on such as drug deals and things like that you see in the metro area as well so maybe we aren't that far from the ways for the metro area. If you hate this county so much MOVE!!! Why do you read the paper for the cities that you hate so much? If you have kids they go to school in this county unless you pay the high price of a private school. I do want to thank you for your tax money since it pays my salary. I work for the county and I love what I do and living in a small town I wouldn't live anywhere else!!

@ dchatman - I moved to this area when I married my wife. She is from Rome. I have Lived in MANY small towns througout GA : Calhoun, Adairsville, Cartersville ,Rome, Dacula and Griffin. None is as backwards , uneducated and fears success as Polk County . I have never seen a place that is as anti- progress and stuck in it's ways as Cedartown and Rockmart . I used to shop at a local chain grocery store , but the cashiers had no idea what they were doing , especially on that there fancy new self - checkout . The customer service was HORRIBLE and unprofessional. All the policemen here are FAT and out of shape ( and they just LOOK like they are corrupt and would ignore something illegal that their good ole buddies might do .) The young people have nothing better to do than drive up and down the main streets , vandalize and deal drugs in parking lots ( I have seen them do it OPENLY ). I have seen fist fights in the middle of town , smelled marijuana while driving on the main street with my window open , been offered the services of prostitutes ... I could go on . Polk County is DEFINITELY NOT Mayberry . Those are just a FEW of the reasons I do not spend my $$ in Polk County and stay away from the impoverished little burgs here. It is WORSE than Ponce De Leon Ave. in mid-town Atlanta !! I much prefer to do business in a REAL small town , such as Rome , Cartersville, Adairsville , etc. Polk County is THE biggest redneck center I have EVER seen. I like my small corner of it , but that is all that I like about it .

Dear annonymous, if you should ever have the opportunity to travel ouside of the Metro area or outside of the State of Georgia for that matter, you will notice that there are differences in culture. The small town atmosphere will always be different than that in the Metro areas no matter what state you live in. Those of us who choose to live in small towns do so because we like small town living. So why should we be criticized for it. Just because you have a metro attitude does not make you better that a person with a small town attitude. Everyone cannot live in the Metro area, it is already over crowded. Just think of what it would be like if we all picked up and moved there. Which brings me to the question; Why are you here in Polk County? Lower taxes cannot be the only reason to live somewhere that you dispise! Oh, by the way God does not love those of us who choose to live in a small town no less that he love you city folk. May God bless you and soften your heart towards your fellow man wheather he be in the city or the country.

gladtobehome, I DONT WANT your help . Just keep to yourself.I want no part of your community , or you , for that matter. We have nothing in common, nothing to talk about . I just live here barely over the county line. If anything on my property catches fire , I keep my heirlooms and valueables in another place , and have insurance on what I have here . Let it burn . It can be replaced. I don't trust "voulunteers " to have the skills and abilities that paid professionals do.

So all you "god's good polk county folk" just stick together . I really don't want any part of you . you are not progressive, you are stuck in the past . the customer service is ATROCIOUS at the few places that I have attempted to spend money here in the past , you all perform your jobs in a most unprofessional matter . As I said, you are welcome to my pittance ofr tax money and my garbage, though.

Anonymous (and anyone else who lives here and berates the citizens of Polk County) --- Just remember you do live in Polk County and in the event you ever need the "volunteer" fire department or any other emergency help, these are the people you are making fun of and they just might be readers of these comments...I wonder if that would make a difference in their service to you. Just a thought. BTW...it does appear you read the Polk County newspaper service.

to finish what I was saying earlier. We are being bombarded with newcomers like anonymous who don't want what the bigger cities have to offer. You can talk about Hooterville, but God help you if you ever need any help from any of us. I had a manager that compared Rockmart to Mayberry, and as I told him, if you gonna be in Mayberry, you better act like Mayberry. We country folk stick together no matter what. We don't appreciate outsiders coming in and trying to change what we are used to. If we are happy this way, why should it bother you?

I grew up in Polk County and returned after 13 years of living in Rome. We are happy with the way things are, if we continue to grow and become a "suburb" of Atlanta then we will be getting all that Atlanta brings. Our crime rate will escalate, more drugs, robberies and so forth. Not to mention our taxes will eventually rise with all of the subdivisions being built

@ tbird and smitty : I think I 'll stay here for a while . I was able to buy several nice acres here just over the county line for a SONG , and I pay a mere pittance in taxes.I like it for that reason , and the fact that I am close enough to civilization ( Rome and the metro area ) to enjoy all of the amenites that they afford me . I never spend a NICKLE in this backwater county , but you are welcome to my garbage and whatever may overflow from my septic tank one of these days .The best part is that it is ALL LEGAL AND MORAL . I am not obligated to spend a penny of what I earn at my job in the metro area in Hooterville county , but I get to enjoy the cheap taxes thanks to your poverty. I will be here for a while , laughing and making fun of this county like the rest of northwest Georgia does .( A typical joke that has been circulating in Rome for years is " Did you hear about Cedartown city hall ? It burned ... all the way down to the WHEELS . and ... There was a parade in ROckmart . It was a BIG event . The mayor even parked his garbage truck for a couple of hours !")

Anonymous,

Please if you are so miserable here then you should just leave. Otherwise don't take yourself to serious. Always remember there are over a billion people that live in China that do not know who you are nor do they care. Since you hold Cabbagetown in higher regard than Polk County then maybe you should try living there. Just remember Polk County was here before you moved here and some how or another we will still exist if you were to leave.

Anonymous! If you don't like Cedartown, then shut up and leave!!! Go back to ATLANTA with your rainbow coalitions. We don't need your money or your GARBAGE !!
« anonymous wrote on Friday, Jul 24 at 03:27 PM »
Cedartown has NO traffic !I grew up and continue to work in the metro area . THAT is traffic. Cedartown , and the rest of polk county , is the laughingstock of northwest georgia . Even when I grew up in Dunwoody , Cedartown was held in lower regard than Cabbagetown.

By the way , I live just inside the Polk county line , where property taxes are cheap .The only contribution that Polk gets from me is my little bit of tax money and my garbage.

As for old hippies , this is the 21st century for goodness sake . cut your thinning grey hair , stop smoking whatever illegal stuff it is that you smoke , forget lynard skynard ,and realize that it is not the 60's and 70's anymore. I grew up at the tail end of that era . I was SO GLAD when it was over .
« oldhippie wrote on Thursday, Jul 23 at 05:56 PM »
Iconoclast, have you ever been outside Cedartown? All towns surrounding us have bypasses. The reason being traffic congestion, not to keep people away from downtown. Bumper to bumper traffic would be a reason to avoid downtown.

Your biker rant was outrageous and insane. I'm afraid to ask your opinion about aging hippies.
« dontjudasme wrote on Thursday, Jul 23 at 01:23 PM »
pray tell, where is your residence iconoclast? anywhere close to "Polk" County?
« iconoclast wrote on Wednesday, Jul 22 at 03:53 PM »
well , That gets back to what I have been saying. If Polk County depends on a bunch of redneck hillbilly toothless drunken drug abusing bikers for revenue, it is in pretty sad shape . I don't see polk doing anything to encourage REAL industry and REAL jobs to locate in the area , even though it is prime for major heavy industry and the good paying jobs that go with it .

I contend that it is for this very reason : Polk does NOT WANT sucess in any way , shape , fashion or form . The people of this county are stuck in the comfort of their ignorance , poverty and desire to not have any sort of better life . I think that it is quite funny that US 27 has been completely re - routed around the heart of Cedartown because they realize that people don't want to waste their time going through hooterville to get to where they are REALLY going . Polk county and it's citizenry simply are not progressive or intelligent enough to become part of the 21st century.

Dad-gum, Iconoclast! Who whizzed in your Cheerios this morning?

Give the thing a chance. Not all bikers these days are over-the-hill Peter Fonda/Easy Rider wanna-bes.

Besides, the article said the authorities had contacted a town that had previously had this activity & gotten only positive feedback. It would bring people (who spend dollars) to Rockmart and provide locals something to do. If it gets out of hand, they can be told not to come back and/or the police can curb "activities" until they get the point & stop coming.

If it bothers you THAT much, don't go downtown on that one night per month!!

yeah. Family friendly . A bunch of toothless , grey haired ponytailed , stuck - in - the - 1970's freak of nature losers smoking pot and popping speed pills ( Since alcohol will be banned , yeah right .) driving thier obnoxiously loud motorcycles dangerously and wrecklessly through Rockmart , with toothless , stuck -in -the -1970's freak of nature loser old women flashing their saggy crepe -paper breasts . I suppose that IS family friendly to Polk County ,because that fits the "family" definition for a lot of the natives here .
