Police officials believe they know the identity of the man found dead in a ditch along Morgan Valley Road on Tuesday, but aren't releasing the name until his identity can be confirmed and his family notified.

Rockmart Police Chief Keith Sorrells said interviews with area residents are helping to identify the man and piece together what happened.

"It's a very active investigation," Sorrells said. "It is an apparent gunshot wound, but we haven't confirmed that."

While officers prepared to reopen Morgan Valley Road tonight, crime scene tape was put up around a home at 306 Second St. Sorrells said police believe at least one of the bullets from the killing traveled and struck the house.

Police were searching the yard, fence, and drilling holes in the vacant home to get to bullets, he said.

Sorrells said police still have no suspects in the case.

Those in the neighborhood have confirmed they heard gunshots, but Sorrells said residents have been unable to offer police more information.

He said the number of shots range from one to five depending on who is being interviewed and no one can pinpoint a time.

"The folks I spoke with were doing things, paid no attention to the gunshots and only went to the door only when they heard the ambulance," he said.
