Last month, head coach Dante Jones took his squad to Gatlinburg, Tenn. to compete in the Turkey Bowl and the young Yellow Jackets left undefeated and as the 2012 Turkey Bowl National Champions.
“We always go to a bowl after the regular season is over with and this year we went to the Turkey Bowl,” Jones said. “It was not an all-star team, but our regular season team.”
In Gatlinburg, the Yellow Jackets went 3-0 to take home the trophy.
“Our defense stood pretty tough up there,” Jones said.
Rockmart, which had went 6-2 in the regular season, opened the tournament by beating the Goshen Warriors of Ohio 27-0 on Thanksgiving Day. The next day, Rockmart defeated Hiram in overtime.
“We were tied with the Hiram Hornets 6-6 after regulation and in overtime we defeated them on penetration,” Jones said.
In the championship game on day three, Rockmart played the Columbus Bucks from Ohio and the two teams played a scoreless regulation.
“We went into overtime tied at zero,” Jones noted. “In overtime we again won on penetration.”
Members of the Rockmart championship team were Jatavion Stocks, Jaden Davis, Isaac Hodges, Sean Molohon, Jorian Haynes, T.J. Hutchins, Nyreon Cooper, Camden Ferguson, Lanear McCrary, Jakaylan Blackwood, Nick Stocks, Antrell McCoy, Dennis Sims and Zylen Middlebrooks.
Other teams participating in the seven-and-under Turkey Bowl tournament were the Amelia Barons of Ohio, the Campbell County Cougars of Tennessee, the Glen Este Trojans of Ohio, the Madison Mohawks of Ohio and the Edgewood Cougars of Ohio.
In all, over 80 teams competed in the tournament in eight different age divisions.
