Rockmart High School graduate Brandon Haywood is currently playing football at Carson-Newman and tonight he and his teammates will be playing in front of a national television audience.

That's because Carson-Newman is playing Wingate tonight at 8:06 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.

Haywood, a quarterback, will be trying to help Carson-Newman pick up their third win of the season. Currently the Eagles are 2-1 on the season.

Carson-Newman got the 2012 season off to a strong start, thanks in part to the 5-foot-11, 185-pound signal-caller. Haywood ran for two touchdowns in the season opener this season in a 56-46 win over Glenville State. Haywood ran for 88 yards on 16 carries and scored twice and he completed 4-of-7 passes for 86 yards and threw a 62-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

In Carson-Newman’s second game, the Eagles took down Lenoir-Rhyne 47-23. In that win, Haywood had one rushing touchdown on 16 carries and he completed 8-of-11 passes for 136 yards.

Newberry upended Carson-Newman in the third game of the season, beating the Eagles 47-22, despite Carson-Newman holding a 12-7 lead after the first quarter of play.

In that contest, Haywood completed 4-of-9 passes for 61 yards and was held to minus 12 yards rushing on 12 carries.

For the season, Haywood has completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 283 yards and a touchdown. He has ran for 111 yards on 44 attempts and scored three times.
