The Atlanta Skydiving Center will be bringing its base of operation to Rome for the month of August.
During Tuesday’s monthly meeting of the Floyd County Airport Commission at Richard B. Russell Regional Airport, Tyler Lawson represented the skydivers in asking for permission to be temporarily based in Rome.
The Airport Commission approved and will allow the skydiving center to use two areas at the airfield. One smaller area for experienced skydivers and another larger one for the novice ones.
Among the issues addressed were location for the tents and operation on the field, insurance policies and a limit on how high jumpers are allowed to jump from.
Lawson is hoping that skydiving can begin as early as Aug. 3.
“Our airport is shutting down for construction,” he said. “For August, we’re having our skydiving operations moved to Rome.”
The center normally runs out of Cornelius Moore Field in Cedartown and trains people to skydive, from novice jumpers to accelerated skydivers.
“We see about 10 to 20 students a day,” said Lawson. “It’s going to be nice to get the word out and pump up the area.”
The center hopes to be open on weekdays from 10 a.m. to sunset.
