Kelly Jack Mayo, 45, of Fort Payne, Ala., was served with the indictments by a the Dekalb County, Ala., sheriff and Cedartown Assistant Police Chief Jamie Newsome at the Polk County Jail, according to Newsome.
Mayo is indicted on two counts of attempted murder, two counts of discharging a firearm in an occupied building and one count of first-degree robbery for the Alabama incident.
He is also charged with felony armed robbery, felony kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of false imprisonment stemming from an attempted robbery October 4 at the Fred’s department store at 550 N. Main St.
Mayo remains in the Polk County Jail, although he will likely be shuffled back and forth between Polk County and Dekalb County, Ala., for court appearances, Newsome said.
Newsome said Cedartown authorities were contacted by the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office after the attempted robbery here. Apparently, Alabama officials noticed striking similarities between the two crimes and felt they were connected, he said.
Similarities included the vehicle and assailant descriptions and the type of weapon used in both crimes. Both stores were part of the Fred’s chain, Newsome said.
Newsome said Mayo was a former Fred’s store manager and had lost his job. That leads police to believe the target was the store chain, not the victims in the crimes.
Two people were shot with a .45-caliber weapon in the Alabama incident, Newsome said. One remains in critical condition, he said.
There were two employees inside the Cedartown Fred’s store during that robbery, Newsome said. Mayo reportedly tied up the cashier and left her by herself as he proceeded to continue his robbery attempt. The woman was able to free herself from her binds and called 911.
