The 10th Annual 5K Road Race was held in Cedartown Tuesday with clear, sunny skies and a large crowd of spectators on hand to cheer on the participants.

The start of the race was slightly delayed past the planned 6:10 p.m. due to live coverage by Fox 5 News in Atlanta.

Marcel Hug, 22, of Switzerland, won the Men’s Open with a time of 10:13.1.

Amanda McGrory, 23, of Savoy, Ill., won the Women’s Open with a time of 11:31.3.

The annual wheelchair race features world-class athletes, including some Olympic hopefuls. Nine countries were represented this year, with 36 athletes participating.

For many of the racers, the Cedartown event is a precursor to the big July 4 Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta.

The athletes compete in special racing wheelchairs. The sport has been featured as a demonstration event (no medals awarded) during previous year’s Summer Olympics. It is limited to athletes with a qualifying physical disability, including amputees, spinal cord injuries and cerebral palsy.

The Cedartown 5K included five categories: Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Men’s Masters, Women’s Master and Junior Boys.

Men’s Open: Josh Cassidy, 24, of Canada, was close behind the winner at 10:13.7, taking second place. Third place was taken by Josh George, 25, of Champaign, Ill. At 10:14.3. Cedartown’s own Krige Schabort, 45, came in at fourth place with a time of 10:33.2.

The rest of the field in the Men’s Open came in as follows: Aaron Pike, 23, Savoy, Ill, fifth; Adam Bleakney, 33, Champaign, Ill., sixth; Brian Alldis, 22, England, seventh; Kyle Shaw, 22, Canada, eighth; Chad Johnson, 33, Charleston, Ind., ninth; Brian Siemann, 19, Champaign, Ill., 10th; Aron Anderson, 21, Sweden, 11th; Ryan Chalmers, no age given, USA, 12th; Geoffrey Kennedy, 28, Puerto Rico, 13th; Alexandre Dupont, 23, Canada, 14th; Jeremy Maddox, 28, Hoschton, Ga., 15th; Jose Polido, 28, Cornelia, Ga., 16th; Michael Mills, 33, Marietta, Ga.; 17th; and Ryan Barnett, 38, Duluth, Ga., 18th.

Women’s Open

Second place in the Women’s Open division went to Sandra Graf, 39, Switzerland,with a time of 12:18.4; and third place was won by Diane Roy, 38, of Canada, at 12:21.6.

Other Women's Open finishers were: Christie Dawes, 29, Australia, fourth; Tatyana McFadden, 20, Champaign, Ill., fifth; Jessica Galli, 26, Savoy, Ill., sixth; Keira-Lyn Frie, 21, Canada, seventh; Anjali Forber-Pratt, 25, Urbana, Ill., eighth; Kelsey LeFervour, 19, Champaign, Ill., ninth; and Margaret Frederick, 19, Kennesaw, Ga., 10th.

The smaller divisions finished as follows:

Men’s Masters: Scott Parson, 50, San Jose, Calif., first; Kenny Herriot, 47, Scotland, second; and Vern Achenbach, 66, Snellville, Ga., third.

Junior Boys: Matthew Lack, 18, New Zealand, first; and Josh Swoverland, 18, Avon, Ind., second.

Women’s Masters: Santiago Sanz, 28, Spain, first; Duane Morrow, 40, Hoschton, Ga., second; and Larry Porter, 40, Springfield, Ill., third.
