He was born December 31, 1915 in Gordon County, the son of the late E. L. and Bunia Thompson Greene.
Mr. Greene served his country with pride during the World War II Conflict. He was sent to the European Theater in July, 1944 as a mortar gunner where he received the Purple Heart Medal for injuries received in combat while in the battle in Germany.
Mr. Green also held the Combat Infantry Badge Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African-Middle Eastern Services Medal, and the American Campaign Medal while fighting in the war in northern France.
He retired from the State of Georgia as Senior Auditor with the Revenue Department after 28 years of service.
Mr. Greene was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Sybil Edwards Greene to whom he was married on August 1936; brothers, Harold Greene and Blanton Greene; sister Mrs. J.L. (Jimmie) Davis; son-in-law, Henry Stephen Taff Sr.; son, Larry Edward Greene Sr., a granddaughter and a grandson.
He is survived by his children, Jerry Kenneth and Mary Evelyn Lowry Greene Sr., Cartersville, Marla Greene McDonald, Rockmart and Vista K. Greene Taff, Cartersville; a sister, Pauline Tanner, of Marietta; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 2 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church where he was the oldest male member. The Rev. Larry Hibberts and the Rev. Brent Tatum officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Harold Buffington, Johnny Forsyth, Ladell Mealor, Donnie Reece, DeWayne Everett and Kenny McDaniel.
