The annual Polar Bear Paddle planned for Saturday on the Etowah River in Rome has been postponed due to flooding from Tuesday's record rainfall.

The family event, in which groups will paddle down the river in canoes and kayaks, will instead by held Jan. 24.

The nearly 5 inches of rain that fell over the region Tuesday has created a fast-flowing current that might be difficult for inexperienced boaters.

Families often participate in the event and organizers said they want to make sure any safety issues are minimal.
