Stacy Dalane Hooper, 22, of 230 Pea Ridge Road, Rockmart, was arrested Tuesday night, said Det. Joe Weldon of the Polk County Police Department.
Hooper remains in the Polk County Jail on charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct, according to Polk County Jail records.
Her son, Preston Hooper, 2, died June 30 in a neighbor’s pool at 100 Pea Ridge Road. Hooper told Atlanta reporters at the time that the child had wandered from home.
Police were called to the area around 10 p.m.
Preston’s death led to an investigation resulting in Hooper’s arrest.
Weldon said the investigation took six months because it was thorough.
“It took a long time to get records that I have subpoenaed,” Weldon said.
He said records included cell phone and medical documents.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) also assisted in the investigation.
Weldon said the police department had ongoing conversations with the Polk County District Attorney’s Office about the case and possible charges.
Hooper has not been indicted, he said.
“We tried to schedule an indictment to get her before the last grand jury, but there were some setbacks and it didn’t get done in time,” he said.
Hooper also has a baby girl, 1, who remains in the custody of the Department of Family and Children’s Services (DFACS). The child has been in state custody ever since her brother’s death.
