About 65 kids have been able to laugh, learn, and play this week as they participate in the Rockmart Recreation Department’s soccer camp.

The camp has been held three days this week at the Nathan Dean Sports Complex and will conclude this Saturday.

According to recreation director Jeff Hulsey, this was about the eighth soccer camp the recreation department has hosted.

“We have right at 65 kids,” soccer league president Bill Sherfesee said. “Which is more than last year, so we are excited about that.”

Sherfesee said one of the reasons they host the camp is to give kids the chance to be active.

“We’re just offering another alternative for the kids,” Sherfesee said. “They have baseball and softball going on right now and we’re offering soccer, so it’s another sport for the kids to get involved in. It’s all about just touching the ball and being active.”

Early bird sign-ups will be offered this Saturday at the conclusion of camp for the upcoming 2012 soccer season.

Regular sign-ups for the soccer league will be from June 1 to July 16 with try-outs being conducted on July 16-17.

Sherfesee noted that the season will start on Saturday, Aug. 4 this year and will feature a parade.
