Mr. Garrett was born in Rockmart, on Dec. 29, 1920. He was a son of the late Sidney and Margie Haynie Garrett. He resided in Polk County his entire life.
He served as pastor of 11 churches since 1945. He was co-owner of Buy Low Building Supply, Rockmart. He was a member of the Morning View Baptist Church, of which he was Pastor Emeritus.
Mr. Garrett was married 67 years to the late Vivian Lipham Garrett. Surviving are two sons, Charles (Glenda) Garrett and Johnny (Faye) Garrett; two daughters, Martha (Max) Barber and Joyce (Tommy) Cooper, all of Rockmart. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Garrett began his ministry at age 24 at the New Prospect Baptist Church. In September 1945 he was ordained into the ministry and was steadfast for 67 years. He had the honor to pastor these churches: Mount Tabor Baptist (Taylorsville), New Prospect Baptist (Rockmart), Friendship Baptist (Cedartown), Wax Baptist (Rome), Morning View Baptist (Rockmart), Bethel Crossroads Baptist (Taylorsville), Bellview Baptist (Rockmart), Lees Chapel Baptist (Cedartown), Unity Baptist (Rome), Pleasant Hill (Rockmart), Liberty View Baptist (Rome). He also shared the Gospel on radio stations in Georgia and Tennessee with the Shut-In Hour.
The funeral service was 11 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2012 in the Morning View Baptist Church sanctuary with Bro. Bill Cantrell, Rev. Royce Campbell, Rev. Jeff Hulsey and Rev. Charles Garrett officiating.
Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Grandsons served as pallbearers and included Michael Garrett, Mark Garrett, Timothy Garrett, Matthew Garrett, Christopher Cooper, Keith Pruitt, Lee Forsyth and Jason Chappell. Honorary pallbearers were Earlene Cole, Barbara Bennett, David Jackson, Nolan Dabbs, John Cook, Ricky Hulsey, Charles Waters, Rufus Cantrell, Donald Lester, Billy Fincher, Ricky Sorrells, Glenn Sorrells, Elmer Roberson, Frank Folsom and all pastors and preachers.
The Alvis Miller and Son Funeral Home of Rockmart was in charge of the arrangements.
