The Cedartown Middle School basketball teams were hoping to make some noise last week in the middle school postseason tournament.

Unfortunately, both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs were upended in their first round games and saw their seasons come to an end.

The young Bulldogs squared off with Rockmart in round one at Darlington on Monday, Feb. 4. At the end of regulation, both the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets were tied. An extra period did not solve the problem, either, and both teams had to go into double overtime still tied.

In the second extra period, the Yellow Jackets pulled away and won 48-43 according to assistant Bulldogs coach Bill Ellis.

The Lady Bulldogs, meanwhile, played against Coosa on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at Cedartown Middle School and came up short, 42-38.

“This is a team that we split with in the regular season,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Ashley Davis said. “In our postseason game, we played fantastic and really played our hearts out, we just came up 15 seconds short.”

The game was knotted at 38 with about 15 seconds left when a Coosa player was able to break loose on a fastbreak. Cedartown’s Deazjah Frazier would foul the Lady Eagle on the play and would be charged with a flagrant foul.

The Coosa player missed both free throw attempts, but because of the flagrant foul the Lady Eagles got possession of the ball after the second missed free throw.

On the in bounds play, Coosa would score a quick two points to go ahead 40-38.

Frazier would miss a shot on Cedartown’s next possession and Coosa grabbed the rebound and raced down court to score the final two points.

“Shana Abram played very well despite having a fractured finger,” Davis said. “Keely Smith was critical on defense for us. And I must brag on Tamera Beeman, one of our sixth graders. She had to go in for Ava Tillmann who had collected four fouls and she played very well, and got a lot of rebounds. And Deazjah played a great game.”

Even though the Lady Bulldogs lost, Davis said it was their best game of the season.

“This was probably the best game we have played all year,” Davis said. “The bench players did a great job even though some of them didn’t get in the game. They were all cheering their teammates on and congratulating them when they did something good. I couldn’t be any more proud of my girls and the way they came together as a team this year and fought to the last minute of every ball game.”
