An Aragon man died early Saturday morning from injuries he sustained when struck by a train in Rockmart.

The man was flown to Grady Hospital in Atlanta by LifeFlight, but died during surgery.

According to Rockmart Police Chief Larry Chubb:

Samuel Wayne Arp, 22, 443 Old Rome Road, Aragon, was struck at the Jones Avenue crossing of the Norfolk Southern line when he tried to cross the track on foot ahead of an oncoming train.

The accident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday.

Witnesses, according to Chubb, said Arp and two other companions were walking when they tried to cross before the train reached them.

One of the three made it across the tracks and then Arp was hit sustaining head and leg injuries.

The other companion did not try to cross the track, according to Chubb.

The railroad company is continuing to investigate the accident, Chubb said.

Sammy Arp was a good friend of mine, and my daughter. We still miss him so very much, he was so kind, and very cool, and laid back. We used to cook a lot at his house with his dad. Hope you are doing good Sammy Sr.
