A Cedartown woman has died after receiving a fatal bite from a snake over the weekend.

Mary Ann Howard, 31, of 225 Noyes St., was pronounced dead at 10:18 p.m Sunday night, after allegedly being bit by a snake she and a friend were carrying in their truck, according to Polk County police reports.

Howard’s friend, Larry James of 1342 South Main Street told authorities with the Department of Natural Resources and Polk police that he and Howard were riding in his truck on Treat Mountain earlier Sunday, when the two noticed a snake in the middle of the road.

James said he drove over the snake trying to kill it and Ms. Howard got out and put the snake in the bed of the truck.

After a while, James reportedly said that he didn’t want the snake in the bed and decided to get a stick to get it out.

As he did so, he heard Ms. Howard yell and move from the truck, apparently bitten by the snake.

James carried Ms. Howard to Polk Medical Center, where she died.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
