The Rockmart Police Department identified the victim as Billy R. Allen, 68, 1984 Hills Creek Road, Taylorsville.
Police officers were still working the scene of the wreck Tuesday morning, and a detailed investigative report was not available. However, preliminary reports indicate Allen pulled out into oncoming traffic on Georgia Highway 113.
Rockmart Fire Chief Scott Carter said the accident occurred at the inter-section of White River Road with the four-lane state highway, a couple miles north of Rockmart High School.
The fire department received the call at 5:37 p.m.
Allen was driving a restored ‘60s model Ford Fairlane 500. Carter said Al-len’s vehicle was struck in the side by another car, in a “T-bone” collision.
Carter did not have further details on the cause of the wreck, and deferred to the police department’s investigation, which was expected to be completed Wednesday.
However, Carter was able to provide some information about the accident scene.
Carter’s personnel arrived on the scene shortly after Polk County Emergency Medical Services. Among their immediate duties was gaining control of a large fuel leak from Allen’s vehicle.
“When we got there, Polk County EMS had just arrived,” Carter said. “The gentleman had been removed from his vehicle by bystanders. They were concerned because of the gas leak.”
Carter said Allen appeared to have sustained internal injuries in the wreck. The fire department hurried to set up a location for a helicopter to land in order to airlift Allen to a trauma center.
However, Allen went into cardiac arrest at the scene, Carter said.
“When that happens, we have to transport them by land to the nearest medical facility,” Carter explained.
Police Tuesday confirmed that Allen died prior to arrival at Polk Medical Center in Cedartown Monday night.
No details were available about the other motorist involved in the accident. Carter said the other driver, a woman, was treated at the scene and released.
More details will be included in a follow-up report.

The death are never updated. Can anyone at the paper give us a reason for any of this?
