The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the handling of funds at the Rockmart Police Department.

Few details were available Wednesday, with officials citing the active investigation in refusing to release more than a rudimentary outline of what is going on.

GBI spokesman John Bankhead said the bureau began its inquiry earlier this week and a report will likely be turned over to Polk County District Attorney Don Wilson "soon."

Bankhead declined to identify the individuals at the Rockmart Police Department who are subject to the inquiry.

Wilson confirmed the GBI is looking into "some funds at the RPD," but said he had no other information at this time, and won't know more than that until the GBI presents its findings.

Rockmart Police Chief Larry Harris was "not in his office" this week and other police department employees said it was unknown when he would be returning.

Rockmart Mayor Curtis Lewis said city officials have decided not to make any statements at this time, pending completion of the GBI's report.

"We hope this will all be resolved in the next four to five days," Lewis said.
