Police Sunday charged a Rockmart man with a recent armed robbery of a Rockmart convenience store.

Arrested was Dexter Leonard Gary, 45, of 928 W. Polk St., Rockmart, according to police.

On Feb. 8, all units of the Rockmart Police Department received a call from Polk 911 in reference to an armed robbery with a hand gun at the Fast Food and Fuel Station, 802 Cartersville Highway, Rockmart.

Sgt. Robert Goss was first on the scene. He spoke with employee Elaine Turner, the clerk who had been working at the time of the robbery.

According to police, the robber, who wore a mask to hide his identity, apparently used his body to break the glass door and make entrance into the store. As the robber entered the store, Turner was coming out of a freezer where she had been stocking items.

Turner said that as she was coming down an aisle in the store, the suspect approached her from an opposite aisle. The robber demanded money.

The suspect reportedly ordered Turner not to move as he left the store. More than $400 was taken in the robbery. After waiting about two minutes, Turner called 911 to report the crime.

Rockmart Police Chief Larry Chubb said he received an anonymous phone tip stating that Gary was involved in the robbery.

An arrest warrant was taken for Gary’s arrest. He was arrested Sunday on East Elm Street, Rockmart, during a routine traffic stop. He was taken to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and booked into the jail.
