False Euthanasia Claims

Summary

On former Sen. Fred Thompson’s radio show, former lieutenant governor of New York Betsy McCaughey said that the House’s proposed health care bill contained a provision that would institute mandatory counseling sessions telling seniors how "to do what’s in society’s best interest … and cut your life short." House Minority Leader John Boehner made a slightly more measured statement, warning that the same provision "may start us down a treacherous path toward government-encouraged euthanasia if enacted into law."

In truth, that section of the bill would require Medicare to pay for voluntary counseling sessions helping seniors to plan for end-of-life medical care, including designating a health care proxy, choosing a hospice and making decisions about life-sustaining treatment. It would not require doctors to counsel that their patients refuse medical intervention.

Analysis

Our inboxes have exploded recently with worried queries from readers who have heard that the House’s proposed health care bill, H.R. 3200, contains a provision that would require that ailing seniors be pressed to consider suicide in order to save the taxpayers money on Medicare. Most messages mention that this clause appears on page 425 of the legislation.

Lets use your analogy, roads are used to facilitate "free market" and our ability to promote commerce. Like roads, healthcare operates on the same principle. We have the option to choose which "road" we choose in determining the best hospital, doctor, insurance carrier, or other facilty that can best fit our needs.

Although you did choose a private health care provider or insurance company, you knew prior to obtaining the treatment and facility to perform the treatment what your private insurance company would or would not cover and to what extent. This would act as a determining factor whether to continue with the prescribed treatment, obtain a second opinion, or go elsewhere.

You also had the option as with your private insurance to obtain other policies to cover unforeseen medical expenses or pay into a separate medical expense account to cover these. No one can ever guarantee that life will be covered 100%. This is why GOD gave us choice and the ability to make it. I don't want some SOCIALIST in Washington to have the power to make this for me. This is my GOD given right and no one should take this from you!

As for government run healthcare, there are many government run (public; tax supported) programs that the government already offers..peach care, medicade, medicare, government sponsored military, and of course the healthcare option(s) not offered to the "normal" US Citizens that Congress and Senate are given option.

This is dangerous. What sounds good today will become a disaster tomarrow. Once the Socialist government has their hands in your healthcare decisions they will have their hand in every aspect of your life!

I am perfectly happy with my health care and the ability to make my own decisions. If I agree or disagree with my Doctor, I can make a choice whether to take his advice or not. I have taken extra precautions to cover illnesses not 100% covered by my insurance company. I do not think I should have to suffer the same fate just because others did not take the time to invest in their health.

The problem is, the economy is down, people have lost their jobs, and need a scape goat (the government) to rescue them. Lift your head, put a smile on your face, and get out of life what you put into it. There are no guarantees!

Don't make our children and their children pay for our mistakes especially trillions of dollars of debt for which government run socialist healthcare will cost.

It is hard to change to mind of bleeding heart liberal democrats. All they want is a hand-out for everything. Government hand-outs? Yeah, that's what we need. That's beginning to sound like SOCIALISM! By the way, nothing in the great document called the "Constitution" does it guarantee the right to health care!

adaman1935, it's not fair to take quotes out of context. The full quote is:

"As I indicated before, I think that we're going to have to have some system where people can buy into a larger pool. Right now their pool typically is the employer, but there are other ways of doing it. I would like to -- I would hope that we could set up a system that allows those who can go through their employer to access a federal system or a state pool of some sort. But I don't think we're going to be able to eliminate employer coverage immediately. There's going to be potentially some transition process. I can envision a decade out or 15 years out or 20 years out where we've got a much more portable system. Employers still have the option of providing coverage, but many people may find that they get better coverage, or at least coverage that gives them more for health care dollars than they spend outside of their employer. And I think we've got to facilitate that and let individuals make that choice to transition out of employer coverage."

The President is not proposing the elimination of private insurance, he is pointing out that ideally, there will be more choices available to consumers and many people will likely choose not to participate in their employer's plan. The President and almost every member of Congress have stated that single-payer - which would eliminate traditional private insurance - is off the table and will not be considered right now, though many people, including me, would be happy to have single-payer come to this country.

I don't agree with the exemptions allowed for Congress and some other federal employees. I know that Congresses under control of both parties have traditionally exempted themselves from many laws, which should not be permitted.

Sorry Papagoose3, The President`s plan is not about choice. I have seen a video clip of him saying, "This will be a transitional period of 10 to 15 years, before we can eliminate employer sponsored coverage." When employer sponsored coverage is eliminated the only ones with choice will be Congress, because they are going to exempt themselves.

If this is such a great plan for you and your family then why are they exempting themselves and their families?

rockgirl04: I don't know you, but I have faith that you are smarter than your comment would indicate.

NOBODY is suggesting that senior citizens be killed or have to choose the time or manner of their deaths. The plan is reiterating the importance of having a living will - the United States government has been encouraging people to have living wills as official policy for over 20 years. This is not a change! Ask your doctor - I bet he or she would also tell you that having a living will is a very good idea.

The notion that the President's plan will take away your choice of insurance plan is also incorrect. This plan is going to give you MORE choices and make all of them more affordable. If you like your current plan and doctor, then by all means, keep it - and in fact, the plan will make it cost you less money!

This plan is a win/win for us, the health care consumers. Follow the money - look at who is opposed to it. You know that the insurance industry and pharmaceutical giants don't have your best interests at heart.

To rockgirl04: What makes you think I haven't read the Bill? Is it because I seem to disagree with your position? People disagree...that's the way it is.

May if you read the health care bill HR 3200 you would think differently. I read the bill on the internet. If you want the goverment to tell you, your parents, or anyone that is disable how to kill themselves every 5 years. Also, if you want the government to pick your health care for you no matter what you want then this plan is for you. As for me I would like them to keep there health care plan and come up with another one.

I can't understand how/why Papagoose3 can be for healthcare for Americans when our local Representative is against it. I'm sure that Doctor Gingrey has an unbiased opinion in this matter since we know that politicians, be they physicians or not, always look out for the best interest of their constituents not their cronies. Let's see...what is that oath that physicians take, oh yeah, the Cadavers Oath. Now the former Governor of Alaska says healthcare for Americans is EVIL. You remember her, before she quit she could see Russia from her house in Alaska and she reads ALL newspapers. She is an integral part of the braintrust opposed to affordable healthcare for Americans.

Why do the opponents of Health Insurance Reform find it necessary to resort to outrageous lies? Is it perhaps that they know that President Obama is on the right track - that affordable, high-quality health care is just what the country needs?

I find it interesting to look at exactly who is opposed the the President's plan - the health insurance lobby, Big Pharma and the large medical consortiums. I know these folks aren't on my side, so I'll stand with the President on this one.
