The local team, A League For A Cure, participated in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day walk for a cure in Atlanta on Oct. 23-25. The team walked 20 miles per day for a total of 60 miles for the weekend.
Members of the team include Cedartown residents Amy Monroe, Dana Peek, and Cindy Dingler, and Nicole Swiger of Rome. Other members of the team were Denise Crawley, Jane Downs, Kimberly Maxwell, and Erin Walter.
According to Monroe, the weekend was an inspiring event with over 2,500 walkers.
“There were old, young, men, and women represented,” she said.
The walk started in Lake Lanier Islands on Friday morning at 8 a.m. and wound through Suwanee and Duluth for 20 miles.
“We camped out at the North Atlanta Trade Center in pink 2-man tents then resumed our walk Saturday, circling Johns Creek and Duluth for an additional 20 miles,” she said. “We returned to camp Saturday night, then completed the walk Sunday for the final 20 miles entering Turner Field to cheering family and friends.”
According to Monroe, over 5 million dollars was raised from the walk.
Eighty-five percent of the net proceeds raised from the Breast Cancer 3-Day will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which is leading the global movement to end breast cancer forever by funding research and community outreach programs.
Fifteen percent of the net proceeds from the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefit the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, a special field of interest fund that will provide support for breast cancer initiatives including research, treatment, prevention and education.
