The City of Rockmart Police Department today formally announced the retirement of Police Chief James Larry Harris.

The release notes that "Harris has served the Rockmart community with distinction and honor over the past 10 years."

Harris tendered his retirement notice this past Monday, Nov. 10. He will utilize his accrued leave and benefits from the city to bridge his time to the effective date in January 2009.

Rockmart City Manager John L. Ellis said that it "was an honor and privilege to work with Chief Harris over the years.'

He adds, "Chief Harris was a man of many words, a dedicated spirit, and a friend to many. The later is what I will miss most.

"On behalf of the City of Rockmart and the citizens of this community we wish Chief Harris well in his retirement and any future endeavors."

Ellis said he would personally supervise and oversee the department during the search for a new chief.

Maybe you can give the job to Frankie Hilburn, that is if his health is under control. He would be a great candidate for the job......
