A two-car collision on Highway 27 near Lewis Road put one man in the hospital and another in jail.

James Alex Turner of Rome is in satisfactory condition after a driver going the wrong way struck his Nissan Altima, according to hospital and police reports.

Turner remains at Floyd Medical Center (FMC).

Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Sgt. First Class Wade Chaffin said the wreck happened at 4:51 a.m. this morning. He said the first call to emergency officials was a driver identifying a car going north in the southbound lane of Highway 27 near Meadow Lakes Boulevard.

Officers were sent to the location, but the wreck occurred before they arrived, Chaffin said.

The driver of the wrong-way Chevrolet Astro van was identified as Francisco Gomez Sales of Cedartown. He was also taken to FMC for treatment, but was treated and released with only minor injuries, according to Chaffin.

There weren’t any other people in either of the vehicles, Chaffin said.

Sales was taken to the Polk County Jail on charges of DUI, driving on the wrong side of the road, serious injury by vehicle, driving without a license and reckless driving.

Chaffin said Turner’s injuries appeared to be extremely serious earlier this morning, including some internal injuries and broken or fractured bones.

He said Turner’s injuries were extensive enough that officers were considering the possibility of this becoming a fatal wreck.
