Brian and Leona Smith register their children, Mary and Olivia Smith, for the Summer Reading Program at the Rockmart Library.
Bugs rule through July 18 at the Rockmart Library where kids are invited to "catch one" that has escaped.

Clues will be posted each week and prizes will be awarded to each child that finds and returns the bug during the Summer Reading Program, launched at 9 a.m. Friday, May 18. Plenty of fun activities were offered, including balloons, tattoos and goodie bags.

Don’t worry if you don’t find the bug that is on the run. Look around your home, find scraps of material and design your favorite, which may be displayed at the library and a prize awarded for the best on exhibit.

A creative writing contest for buggy imagining will be offered through July 13. Write about anything that is bug related.

For children that enjoy art, a coloring contest will also be held. Prizes will be awarded in five age categories and all entries will be displayed at the library.

Story time will be held at 10:30 a.m. each Tuesday and special programs will be offered at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesdays. Included will be a puppet show on June 4 and 18 and Storyteller Jane Cunningham, June 11; Bruce Bernstein, Music is Magic at 2 p.m. only June 25.

Chad Crews, magician, will be featured on July 2 and a puppet show on July 9.

Crafts and workshops will begin at 2 p.m. Space is limited and registration is required.

These include scrap booking, June 2; buggy sand art, June 6; quilting, June 9; design a kaleidoscope, June 13; buggy weaving mats, June 20; bug house, June 27 and butterfly gliders, July 11.

Track your reading time and receive a prize. Upcoming fifth graders and younger children can register and receive a sheet to mark time.

Prizes will be awarded for reaching the following goals:

2 hours: Certificate, Mrs. Winner’s sausage and biscuit, Aladdin’s Castle arcade tokens.

4 hours: Kroger cupcake, Kim’z Parteez balloon

6 hours: Honeymoon bakery cookie and Wendy’s Jr. Frosty

Highlighting June’s calendar of events will be the fifth annual Rockmart Idol singing contest at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 26. To participate, contestants are asked to sign up at the library.

Metamorphosis, a summer program for young adults, will also be held at the library through July 18.

Gift certificates, T-shirts, bicycles, CDs, DVDs, jewelry, watches and other prizes will be awarded to participants achieving goals.

Extra reading credit can be earned by reading to children, make a book poster and / or book review and attend a workshop. Featured will be scrap booking at 2 p.m. June 2, navigating teen friendly websites at 2 p.m. June 23 and bingo at 2 p.m. June 30.
