ATLANTA (AP)— Georgia Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond is set to address the National Conference on Unemployment Insurance in Washington.

Thurmond is set to address the conference Wednesday morning to speak about the Georgia Work$ initiative. Thurmond created the Georgia Work$ program in 2003 to allow unemployed workers to receive job training and a stipend to offset expenses like childcare and transportation.

The conference is sponsored by the National Association of State Workforce Agencies and the U.S. Department of Labor.

Thurmond, a Democrat, is challenging Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson in the Nov. 2 general election.
